Bob Baum, AIA, NCARB
Principal and Board Member
Bob excels at designing beautiful, well-crafted buildings in the face of challenging constraints. Whether a new infill building or a multi-story addition, his solutions are rooted in client identity and the principles of great urban design.
Bob listens carefully and responds with designs specific to client aspirations. He relishes the search for the optimal solution and loves the “second round” of the design process: when the heart of the challenge has been revealed. He says “This is the point where I can think most clearly about the design and help my clients to realize their goals.” A co-leader of the San Francisco studio, Bob is skilled at engaging other designers and helping them develop their own talents.
“I’ve spent approximately half of my life in New York and the other half in San Francisco. I love the intensity of street life, the way cities evolve over time, and most importantly, the way a new building can enhance an urban context. A great urban building should be judged by all the ways it contributes to the evolution of a great city.”

Principal
David’s excitement about all things educational is contagious. He excels at helping clients envision a more compelling future condition: broadening their conceptions about the transformative power of great design.
David’s drive to create learning environments with real educational outcomes is reflected in his design process. His natural curiosity and patience engage clients and collaborators in a deeper understanding of a design problem, unlocking design solutions with meaning. Recognizing that the greatest innovations often emerge from constraints, he loves taking small projects and elevating them into major impacts that support a client’s mission. David is a leader in our firm’s research efforts into emerging 21st century pedagogies and how they interact with the built environment.
“I’m an education geek. When I hear a news story about how screen time impedes the language development of infants, or how digital audio doesn’t stimulate the language center of the brain like a human voice, I almost have to pull over to absorb the magnitude. Nerdy—I know. But potentially significant as we think about how to design better learning environments for tomorrow’s learners.”

Krista Shepherd, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, NCIDQ
Principal and Board Secretary
Krista is adept in defining big picture concepts while not losing sight of the detail. Clients say that she pays attention to facets of an issue that others overlook, resulting in architecture that reflects what they imagined but could not express. Krista jointly leads our Phoenix studio and blends architecture, landscape, and urban design. Her relationships with clients and colleagues are the foundation of a powerful dialogue about the potential of design. This makes her a highly effective leader. She brings conceptual thinking, technical expertise and optimistic energy to every design effort, large or small.
Essential to Krista’s existence is being in the “mess of design”. This assumes that everyone on the team is designing simultaneously to debate, contrast, and find resonance with emergent concepts that drive the project.
“If you pay attention to what is happening in the world around you, all things are interconnected. I am surprised every day by this reality—it reveals startling links between seemingly unrelated things.”

“In tangrams puzzles you're given seven simple geometric shapes, yet applying various layouts will create over six thousand different configurations. This is how I approach design—realizing there are many opportunities to create a unique form utilizing the most basic geometries and materials. It’s how you link the pieces together that creates the form, yet if you relocate one piece it changes the composition and creates unexpected possibilities.”

Robert Gould, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP
Principal Emeritus
The hallmark of Bob’s 40 year career is his enthusiastic, entrepreneurial vision. His ability to interpret trends, economic shifts and technological changes, combined with his ability to build lasting relationships, has laid the foundation for the design practice that Gould Evans is today.
Bob’s focus within our practice has always been through the widest possible lens. His entrepreneurial spirit transformed a two-person design practice into a network of regional studios, practicing across project types with a focus on local environmental and socio-economic issues. These are the seeds that allowed relevant and regionally-sensitive architecture to take root.
“One of my favorite sayings is “things of quality have no fear of time.” Participating in our intellectually rigorous design process has been the most exciting and stimulating endeavor of my life. Seeing the firm continue to thrive and produce excellent work like the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center gives me great pride.”

Principal
Melissa provides leadership to the studio and within the design profession with a primary focus on the impacts of architecture on people. She believes this knowledge is essential to enabling the creation of sustaining and appropriate environments and increasing society’s expectations of the built environment while elevating the profession. Clients and colleagues say she has a unique ability to hear what people are saying and to translate those needs and ideas into problem-solving design.
In an effort to create positive impact, much of Melissa’s work has focused on social justice and public projects of all sizes. She has successfully applied research to design, resulting in measurable outcomes. Believing that empathy and respect are the foundations for conversation and design, she excels at bringing multi-disciplinary expertise to the studio to facilitate more informed and rigorous explorations.
“Architecture is not passive. Architecture is about listening, seeing, tasting, smelling, and feeling. It impacts us deeply. It changes our brain, and therefore our behavior and wellbeing. It has the capacity to uplift and to degrade; it can bring people together and it can divide. And it is our collective and individual responsibility to know how our designs affect people working in, living in, passing by, or visiting them. Architecture is my small way of helping to improve people’s lives.”

Sean Zaudke, AIA, LEED AP
Associate Principal
Sean is a highly skilled designer, contributing at all levels to the architectural practice. He has collaborated across most of our studios on a diverse group of award-winning projects. He is passionate about finding meaning in our work and believes that the design process is an act of translation: transforming dialogue with our clients into built form.
Sean compliments his design ethic with experience as a builder, fabricator, and manager. His passion for design endears him to clients and helps build lasting relationships. He has been instrumental in building the Lawrence Studio design culture and has recently expanded his drive and skill to the Kansas City studio.
“I have always loved talking about food, wine, books and music. I may suffer from a bit of synesthesia, but I see in this a way to conceive the spirit of a design and to create buildings that are more than the sum of their parts.”

Robert Riccardi, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP
Principal and Board Member
Robert’s blend of design sensibility, intellectual curiosity and personality benefits every project he touches. He has the rare ability to understand the various layers that exist within a single design opportunity, resulting in architecture that is truly multidimensional.
A gifted design leader, Robert engages clients and motivates his fellow designers. They are inspired by his belief that great design can make a difference and every project brings the potential for positive change. In turn, he is inspired by clients who are willing to engage in a process of mutual discovery, who challenge the design team to think deeply and solve problems in a manner that’s unexpected and delightful.
“Regardless of scale, everything we touch as designers is relative to context and circumstance. Our job as architects is to carefully explore possibilities through a simple process of discovery—extracting the obvious while also being curious and mindful enough to uncover unexpected outcomes.”

Kelly Dreyer, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP
Associate Principal
Kelly’s skill at taking complex problems and providing beautiful and easily understood design solutions is recognized by clients, partners and colleagues alike. He is an accomplished designer contributing to many of our firm’s highest profile projects. His limitless creativity and drive have provided leadership opportunities across all aspects of our Lawrence studio, mentoring younger staff and building the studio’s distinct design culture. He is also a respected thought leader firmwide, having collaborated across most of our studios throughout his 15 years with Gould Evans.
“I find excitement in exploring new territory… there is a sense of wonder and ultimately ‘aha’ in the process of making known what you don’t know. Perhaps Bowie said it best: "Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable. Go a little out of your depth, and when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting." This opportunity for artistic exploration is what drives me, and what ultimately helps us as designers to find better solutions to old problems or new opportunities not yet conceived.”

Martin Tovrea, AIA, NCARB
Associate Principal
Martin is passionate about the process of transforming a client’s vision and goals into a tangible, beautifully-constructed building. He is a consummate partner to his clients in navigating the complexities of the design and construction process in a way that they can understand and embrace. Over more than 20 years of experience in the design and management of large-scale, complex projects, Martin has developed expert technical competence, including a specific focus on Quality Assurance and Quality Control. His oversight helps to ensure that our work reflects client goals, maintains design intent, adheres to budget and is constructible.
A Louisiana native and proud graduate of Louisiana State University, Martin has practiced across the nation in locations as far-reaching as Alaska. Martin re-joins Gould Evans in our New Orleans studio, after working locally for five years with Blitch Knevel Architects and practicing for seven years prior to that in our Gould Evans Phoenix studio.
“I’ve lived and worked in three very different climate zones, ranging from the humidity of the Southeastern United States, to the harsh winters of Alaska, to the arid peacefulness of the desert Southwest. A key driver for my work has been deep engagement with the constructability principles of each locale – since concepts like sustainability and human comfort can look so different – with the goal of realizing a client’s vision by responding to the uniqueness of place.”
